Why Gut Health Is Good For Your Skin
You've probably heard it a million times before, You are what you eat.
The importance of a healthy, all round diet has long been taught to us since School days. We can all remember seeing a food chart at least once.
We understand that a balanced diet can be good for our bodily functions, maintaining healthy organs and preventing diseases caused by improper diets.
Gut health can be easily ignored and only becomes an issue we address when we have to.
But first, what is GUT HEALTH?
Gut Health refers to the physical state and physiological function of the many parts of the gastrointestinal tract.
In a nutshell, the proper balance of the millions of bacteria in our gut, help us to eat and digest food without discomfort. All the food that we consume is broken down in the gut then distributed around the body through our bloodstream helping to nourish us.
There are certain types of food that contribute to a healthy digestive system and other types that can wreck havoc, either instantly or gradually.
But what does gut health have to do with skin health?
As you know, skin, is the largest organ of our body so it goes without saying, that our skin will visibly show us the effects of poor gut health or great health for that matter.
Scientists have actually found a link between a healthy gut and healthy skin and are encouraging us to keep an eye on our guts if we want to have radiant skin.
So, how do we keep optimum gut health for radiant skin?
Eat a diet rich in wholefoods
Maintaining a diet rich in wholefoods is the best thing you can do for your skin and overall health. A diet that includes proteins ( meats or vegan ), fruits and vegetables will keep your gut function healthy, timely and painless and the evidence of this will show on your skin.
Probiotics
Probiotics are live bacteria you can consume through supplements or foods. They are easily found but can be overwhelming sourcing through so many different varieties to find the right one for you. The best bet is talk to your GP about it and work out what the ideal probiotic for you would be. The wonderful benefit of taking a probiotic supplement is they help keep your gut regular, meaning your body flushes out toxins more consistently.
De-Stress
Stress has been found to increase motor function in the large intestine, however, the emptying of the stomach is delayed leading to gut discomfort and problems with regular function.
De stressing can be easier said than done however, regularly taking part in Wellness practices such as meditation can help balance your stress levels, calm the mind and help with breath work and overall relaxation.
While we may feel overwhelm and at times, like we are alone, it's important to remember to reach out when we are feeling stress. Either reach out to friends or family or speak to your Medical Practitioner to get support.
Regular Exercise
A brisk walk 4-5 times a week is a great way to get your body moving. This creates good habits and sets the tone for other physical activities.
Exercise has been linked to a reduction of inflammation in the gut as well as having a positive change in the micro bacteria in the gut.
Exrcise should be enjoyable and fun, if you choose something that makes you happy, you are most likely to stick to it long term.
Now that you know the importance of gut health make the time to intentionally make a plan towards a good Gut health goal.
Is it cooking a batch of your favourite soup? Or is it sipping a herbal tea while reading your favourite book or taking your pooch for a long walk?
Whatever you choose, remember the goal is to feel good and to take positive steps towards your wellness journey.
Don’t forget to be kind to yourself!
